How NORDCITY Works with Water

Water is one of our most valuable natural resources, which is why it is important to manage it responsibly. At NORDCITY, we combine water-saving technologies, green roofs, and efficient rainwater harvesting to reduce consumption while contributing to a more pleasant urban environment.

Less water used, same level of comfort

In the NORDCITY Obchodná office building, we use low-flow faucets, water-saving showers, and toilets. Thanks to these solutions, water consumption can be reduced by up to 80% compared to standard practices, without compromising the comfort of the building’s occupants.

Responsible water management doesn’t end with reducing consumption within the building. That’s why, at NORDCITY, we also view rainwater as a natural resource that can be collected directly on-site and put to effective use.

Rainwater doesn't have to end up in the sewer system

Rainwater is collected in retention tanks and then used, for example, to irrigate vegetation on the roof and in the surrounding area. This reduces both the consumption of drinking water and the amount of rainwater that would otherwise flow into the sewer system.

Infiltration pits and rain gardens also contribute to stormwater management. They allow water to gradually seep back into the soil, thereby helping to prevent the area from drying out and reducing the burden on the sewer system.

Rain gardens are designed as shallow depressions into which water can flow from roofs, sidewalks, and other paved surfaces. The water is naturally retained here and gradually seeps into the ground. In addition to their practical function, they also serve as another green element in the urban landscape.

More than 1,100 m² of green roofs

Green roofs covering an area of more than 1,100 m² also play a significant role at NORDCITY Obchodná. The vegetation helps retain rainwater, reduces overheating of the building on hot days, and contributes to a more pleasant microclimate throughout the area.

At the same time, the roof is not merely a technical and ecological feature. For people working at NORDCITY Obchodná, it provides a space for lunch, a short break, meeting with colleagues, or relaxing in the fresh air with a panoramic view of Žilina.

Sustainability as Part of the Whole

Individual measures are most effective when they work together. Water-saving technologies reduce drinking water consumption, retention tanks collect rainwater for further use, green roofs help retain water, and infiltration features naturally return it to the soil.

The result is an environment that makes more efficient use of natural resources while also creating a higher-quality space for both people and greenery.

These solutions also contributed to the NORDCITY Obchodná office building earning LEED v4 Platinum certification and the global LEED Earth award. At NORDCITY, we don’t view sustainability as a single specific measure, but rather as a set of well-thought-out solutions that together create a better-functioning urban environment.
